…Digital Learning Design is something we will hear a lot more about over the next few years. It’s still hard to say precisely what it is but there’s no doubt that it’s a growing area and that it’s happening around the intesection of elearning, content formation / reformation, and learning sciences.
We have started offering a DLD course at the university. And I’m more than a little excited about this. It’s been made a bit more problematic by the now-usual School spiel about cutting back on external speakers, FTEs, the optics of running something that ticks the M-level boxes but doesn’t break the bank, and so on.
But I’m still confident that it will work out. The first cohort registered this week. It will be interesting to see how it goes. So from time to time I may bring bits of their world here to belfield — just for the fun of it. And in the interest of greated understanding of ICT in a cold climate… ;-)
It’s that time of year again. And as usual I’m left feeling a bit like an end of term politician driving through some daft reform or another before the Dáil goes into recess.
We have our Exam Board tomorrow morning. It’s a bit more restricted in its reach and remit than last year’s (pre-semesterised) board and for the first time in almost 10 years ‘my’ HDipEd Database is not needed to help sort final grades and rank ordering in the yeargroup. We’re all Banner now
The course evaluations were very positive this year; however, a number asking for extra practical workshops and projects to be built into the programme. That’s not going to happen on current budget… So, Yes; there may well be a Grad Dip Ed ICT strand next year – and an MEd/MA one possibly but No there is little chance of investing in more authentic resources and provision.
Oh and the long-awaited UCD Fellowships won’t include a learning technology / elearning strand. Not strategic enough it seems… Nice one. The stuff of legend perhaps in a year or two but right now a bit too D4 to be credited.
So. That and the news that DIT are once again forging ahead with their eLearning Summer School while we at UCD sit staring into our square lake can only mean that it’s time to be elsewhere.
For a few weeks or so at any rate.
While the dust settles on another Belfield moment and the wounds are healing…
Class of 2007: wear sunscreen….
… something can be a bittersweet moment.
The eTwinning PAG has taken up a fair amount of time over the past few years. Last week we finalised our Report to the EU on the project and our recommendations for the next generation of the action – which will take place in a very different administrative context.
Then the obligatory photo. Anne wasn’t there because she was working somewhere else in Brussels. But anyway, here are the rest of us in all our motley glory on Floor 14 of one of the EU carbuncles:
Pieter, Michelle, Marta, Bettina and some fat old guy.
Two colleagues decided to organised an in-house conference for doctoral students at the School. It took place this evening and wasn’t half bad. I managed to catch a number of the presentations including one or two titles that wouldn’t have struck me on face value as worth a look. The Presentation Order doesn’t figure highly in my day to day life, for example. Or whole school evaluation. But they were were all worth turning in for.
Couldn’t bring myself to go after the occasional Wild Claim or Enthusiastic Overstatement either. Which only goes to show I must be mellowing with age…
Dympna and Gerry.
…. but then again so is the attention span of the average student.

The activity sheet for today’s Lecture is HERE. The coursenote on Bill Roger’s work is HERE. And the DE& S School Matters report is HERE - but it’s big, so a broadband download is recommended.
For those of you unused to blogs, you will find the prevous entry immediately below this one.
I have been informed that the BLACKBOARD situation is now being ‘prioritised’. We’ll see…
